Columbus is a city named after the great discoverer

Ohio State got its name from the same named river, and its lands are the combination of untouched and wild landscapes with advanced industrialization. The capital of the state, the city of Columbus, is named after the great seafarer Christopher Colombo. With a population of approximately 730,000 inhabitants, Columbus is the largest and most populous city in the state, and also the administrative center of Franklin County.

The history of Columbus and the territory that later became the capital of the present state is characterized by bloody battles between European settlers and the indigenous population. These fierce clashes came to an end only in 1795, after the Battle of Fallen Timbers, which marked the defeat of the Indians and the signing of the Greenville Treaty. Later, in 1797, a young surveyor from Virginia, Lucas Sullivant, founded here a small settlement on the bank of the Scioto River, which after a few years, namely, in February 14, 1812, became the capital of the newborn state of Ohio. Columbus grew rapidly and developed thanks to the introduction of a new infrastructure and the first railway opened in 1850.

Visit the city you can start from its center, where you can find a lot of art galleries, restaurants, pubs and specialty shops, also here you can see the majority of architectural attractions. The construction of the State Capitol, founded in 1839 in a neoclassical style, was clearly inspired by the world of ancient Greece, offering a characteristic entrance – the portico of Doric columns, crowned by a large central pediment, with the structural task of supporting domed rotund illuminating the interior.
Also very interesting structures are the Onyo Forensic Center, an original Art Deco complex, Wexner Center, designed by such a giant of architecture as Peter Eisenman and used as an art gallery and the Greater Columbus Convention Center.

In addition to architectural attractions in Columbus, you can visit interesting museums, among which you cannot lose sight of the Columbus Museum of Art, opened since 1931. Here you will see a collection of European and American paintings of early modernism. Meanwhile, the Historical Center of Ohio is disposed a few kilometers from the city and is focused on the history of the state. Among the city parks, you should definitely visit the Rose Park and the Big Darby Creek.
