Debrecen is the city which should be enjoyed

Being the second after Budapest populous city in Hungary, Debrecen, with its 207,000 inhabitants, is placed in Hajdu-Bihar County about 50 km away from the Romanian border. The town was badly damaged during the bombing of 1944, but was rebuilt and during the 100 days became the headquarters of the National Provisional Government. Today Debrecen is an industrial and university center, also the place of the Hungarian Protestantism.

In the heart of Debrecen can be found Prospect of Vörös Hadsereg Utja and that is the true axis of the city. There are some buildings as old prefecture and county’s important public buildings, which have the different facades with rich ceramic decoration in perfect Art Nouveau style.
The symbol of Debrecen is Kalvinista Templom, that is, the largest Calvinist church in the whole of Hungary. This masterpiece building was constructed by Hungarian neoclassical masters in 1802 and has two towers of 60 meters of high. The church can accommodate 3,000 people at a time and often hosts organ concerts all year.

Continuing the tour of the town you can walk to Reformatus Kistemplom, which is a small Protestant temple, which firstly was built of wood in the 18th century and burnt down in a fire, then it was rebuilt in stone on the donations of the local population. Church dome had a shape of onion form similar to the Bastion, but recently the dome was demolished by the wind and therefore the structure of the church has been called headless.

Fans of theater art will not miss the chance to visit the Csokonai Theatre, which is an eclectic building of 1861, which was dedicated to the local poet Csokonai.
