Duncan is small and cute town in the county of Spartanburg, South Carolina with a populace of 3,181 in accordance to the 2010 census, which is about 1,125 families.
The racial makeup of the city is represented by 65.68% of White and 30.84% African America.
The story began when in 1811 there was established a post office and around it began to form a tiny village called New Hope.
In the mid-1850s, there was a plan of the railroad through Duncan, but the civil war broke them and postpone plans until 1873, when the railway line Atlanta – Richmond began to pass through the city.
Shortly after the Civil War, ambitious and hungry for recognition Leroy Duncan came to town and began to buy lands. During the inauguration of a new railway line, Duncan promised the citizens that will provide land to citizens if they agree to rename the city in his honor. And according to this event in 1881 the city got its name officially.
In the same year, Duncan became the seat of an important milestone in African-American history, thanks to the opening of Rock Hill Negro School.
Over the next two years from the date of the name change, the population of Duncan began to grow, along with the emergence of several stores, saw, flour and cotton workshops. The city received its charter in 1889.
And in 1892, Hughes hotel was opened, which became the center of town, attracting travelers from the road of Greenville-Spartanburg.
