About Macedonia: Roman Empire Successor

Country of Macedonia has no access to the sea and located in the South-Western Europe at Balkan Peninsula. The highest point of Macedonia is Korab, 2753 m above sea level. The climate of the country is temperate-continental. During the year the days are mostly sunny (200 days per year).

The capital of Macedonia is Skopje was founded in antic times. City located in highly seismic zone and in 1963 was destroyed during the earthquake. After the restoration modern buildings have been mixed with the old streets of survived districts. In Charshia district around the Kale fortress of XI c. located the most specific eastern bazar in Europe. There are many interesting sightseeing’s in Skopje: Turkish bath of XV c, Mustafa-Pasha’s Mosque, Orthodox charge of Sveti Space from XVII-XVIII c., caravanserai. In city’s new district are located museums: National Museum of history, Art Museum etc.

The second biggest city of the country is Bitola. There is antic fortress “Heraklea Lintsetis” ruins in Bitola founded by Phillip Macedonian in IV BC.

Ochrid is a town and lake at the same time, and between is the Perl and is under the UNESCO heritage patronage. Town bordered with Albania, which you could reach by lake. The Orchid Lake is like sparkling emerald. Lake’s maximum depth is 288 m., origin of the lake goes back to prehistoric time. In Orchids center is St. Sophia basilica, built in 11 c., in which you could see a unique icon. The most sacral place of Orchid is St. Naum monastery, who was the healer and enlightener. According to legend if you put your ear to Saint’s sarcophagus you could hear his heart’s beating. During the Rome Empire city of Orchid was called Lihnida and was located at the main trade way from Rome to Asia Minor. Due to this fact a lot of sightseeing kept from the antic time is Roman, for example antic theater of Varosh. There are a lot of Christian churches here: fortress of Samuil XI c., ex monastery of St. Panthelemon of IX c. Church of St. Jovan Caneo, which became mosque, was built in XIII c.

Struve city is in 15 km distance from Ochrid, and located on the river of Black Drim. This river connects Ochrid Lake with Adriatic Sea. There are held a lot of festivals in the city: famous poetic festivals when the poets declare their poetry from the special bridge, besides annual international fair of folk Crafts. The buildings have beautiful red tile roofs and are surrounded by lush gardens and vineyards.

During Christmas holidays in Vevchani place near the Struve being held New Year Christian cranaval with festivities.

The city pleases the sun 240 days per year. Lake of Prespan located at the border with Albania. There is Desert Island in the middle of the lake called Golem Grad or Snake Island with ruins of St. Peter Monastery.

National cuisine will be liked even by gourmet. The main specialty is chopped meet in Turkish style. One of the most common dishes is “gravche na tavche” – beans, stewed on special frying pan and famous trout from Ochrid Lake.

Open Slavic soul, great dishes, orthodox and roman architecture and natural monuments and wonders – there are just scarce list of reasons, for which you will wish to come back to Macedonia again and again.
